Networking Tips in a Tough Economy
- To get a job, you have to put yourself out there.
- Make use of the "hidden job market"--people you're most comfortable with such as friends, relatives, former professors, and former classmates who have connections and can introduce you to people in your field of interest.
- Job fair tips: Make yourself unforgettable. Men: Wear a stylish suit and a tie that's fashionable and grabs some attention--one that you've received compliments on in the past. Women, be sure that your shoes are stylish and match the ensemble.
- Another job fair tip: Create a really unusual business card. Add an element--such as a color, graphic, or size--that says "I'm different, take notice."
- Practice two things: a strong handshake and looking the person directly in the eyes. Even if you don't talk much, these two gestures create a sense of confidence and dominance.
- Make a "cheat sheet" of networking introductions and conversation starters so you'll have them when you freeze up or get stricken by shyness.
- Use online networking sites to find leads, and email rather than call people whom you think may be able to help you.
- Use a recruiter if you have specific job credentials; they know how to position you in the best light.
- Do your homework on the employer, their market, products, and potentially some of the key executives. This will position you to ask good questions and participate confidently in dialogue.
- Have references prepared--people you know will substantiate any work or studies you have already performed, and will say something positive on your behalf.
- In some industries, it's become expected to have an "online presence"--an interactive resume or video blog that demonstrates some of your skills or accomplishments, and potentially shows you presenting a valued commodity, yourself.
